And remember these are the quick tips.
- Look for a better Framing
- Add more to the composition
- Correct use of exposure triangle
- Use rule of thumb
- Avoid handshake
- Capture the mood
- Be creative(play with shutter)
- Utilize the background and foreground
- ISO plays a key role
- Change your perspective
- Look for a better Framing:
First of all, let’s see what is framing in details to make it more easy to understand.
When you click pictures its get saved in a particular size, shape or structure you can say, that size is of a rectangular shape. It is because of the images sensor which is of rectangular shape.
The image sensor is the sensor which captures and save the light after forming a picture.
It is the memory sensor and this part is inside the camera body.
So you will never see a picture in a circle frame or in a triangle shape it’s because of the frame(image sensor) which is rectangular.
So, when you click a picture just it in mind how will it look in that rectangular shape. Try to put your subjects and backgrounds in such a way that it will look fantastic in the frame.
See the below image for better understanding. And always try to create a better frame.
I believe the one how to know how to frame a picture is a great photographer or will be among the one in near future.
- Add more to the composition:
What is a composition in photography?
Let’s see what is composition before we add more components to the pictures.
In my language, whatever you want in your picture is composition. When you click pictures the collection things which produce pictures as an outcome is a composition.
Whatever you capture within your frame is called composition
For example, I snapping a landscape I just saw a beautiful tree and clicked it. The tree in the picture looks good. But the overall picture doesn’t look that good it can be proved by creating a better composition by adding some more subjects into the frame. Like use the sky (for color composition), try to add any hut nearby, or use the negative space. In total it means add more objects to your frame this is called composition in photography.
- Correct use of exposure triangle:
It is well said by the expert’s photographers that, Exposure triangle is the three pillar of photography. The one who skilled the rule of exposure triangle is a technically strong photographer.
So to make the base of your photography skill, you need to use the exposure triangle correctly.
But hold on.
Before we proceed how to use? let’s just see
What is exposure triangle in photography?
The light that enters the camera sensor through the lens to form an image by exposing the image is called exposure.
In layman language, the different types of lights to create an image is the exposure.
And in Camera, there are three key pillars or elements which controls the light entering the camera.
These three elements are Shutter Speed, Aperture, and ISO.
So the combination and contribution of these three to form an image are called exposure triangle. Among these three elements, each and every element has their own specific role. But the common characteristic are all of them has the capacity to control the exposure.
The speed at which the shutter allows the light to enter the image sensor. It is like a curtain when the longer it is open more light will come in.
A specific time when the shutter is open at a given set of the camera to allow the light to pass.
Specific role: It controls the Motion blur it plays a role when we capture action picture to freeze it like in sports photography.
HIgher the shutter speed, more action picture will get a freeze but it will allow less light. So for light, you need to compensate with the aperture and ISO
What is an aperture in photography?
The opening and closing of the lens are called Aperture. More lights enter when the aperture is large and less when it’s less open.
Specific role: To capture a sharp image and to control the depth of fields which can create a blurred background.
What is ISO in Photography?
The sensitivity of the image to the light is called ISO. and the ISO is set by the International Standard Organization a common institute.
How much sensitive the image sensor is to the light.
Specific role: Lower ISO clear image, higher ISO noise and grainy will be there in the image.
So these three pillar controls the exposure and is called the exposure triangle.
The tips here is you should study and understand the light and control the exposure triangle accordingly to create the type of image you want.
- Use rule of thumb:
Follow the rule of thumb to capture amazing pictures.
What is rule of thumb is photography?
The rules are like a tool to follow some standard formula which will save your time and will give accuracy in creating the perfect shot.
Make two parallel line vertically and two horizontally in the frame so let’s draw and see it. After that, you will see 9 square share box and four intersections.
Now when you click the picture try to put the subject on those intersection points according to your frame and the pictures need. You will see it will create a beautiful picture.
According to me as such there are no rules in photography but as said above these are standard prove rules which do create a good picture.
But hold on you can break the rule by putting the subject in the center sometime it will even create an amazing picture.
So it’s not necessary to follow the rules allows
- Avoid hand Shake:
A handshake is general while clicking pictures. But there are techniques to avoid handshake. First, let’s see,
How handshakes affect the image?
The image will get blurred and it will look shaky and you will not achieve the desired picture. To avoid hand shake you can do the following things:
A. Use a tripod: it helps to stable the camera and avoid handshake.
B. Increase the shutter speed and compensate with the aperture to get an adequate amount of exposure.
C. Use IS lenses. A lens with IS inbuilt feature. (Images stability)
But, in many cases, you won’t be able to use the tripod.
I mostly avoid using a tripod. So what’s the technique to get rid of a handshake?
The best option is to practice without a tripod as much as possible and try to stable your hand.
- Capture the deepness :
According to my thoughts and experience if your picture needs a description of what you have captured, then you are missing the essence of photography.
The picture should speak of the emotion, depth, mood and what is it all about and what you have captured.
Try to capture a picture in such a way that the picture will speak itself so that you need not give any description of it.
The best way to reach this level is too follow all the techniques you have learned till now and practice as much as you can.
- Be creative(play with shutter):
Shutter speed has its own specific role as discussed above in the exposure triangle section. But as I said earlier there is no rule for unique photography.
So, with shutter speed, you can really create some amazing pictures.
Try out decreasing the shutter speed when you were not supposed to do and compensate the aperture and ISO to get an adequate amount of light. see what you will experience.
For example, make the subject stand still and background and other things moving see what kind of picture you get. You will love your creativity.
These are the situation and objects where you can play with the shutter speed by decreasing it.
A. Flowing water body. It looks amazing
B. moving lights like cars at night when their head lights are on.
C. Moving subjects. Freezer the subject and blur the background and vice versa.
- Utilize the background and foreground:
Pictures are always great when you properly utilize the background and the foreground. By adding these two things you will get a beautiful frame. It helps to create a better composition.
Your background can either be a scenery, tree, negative space or anything behind the subjects which will add value to the picture.
The foregrounds are anything front of the subjects. So while clicking makes a frame utilizing the foreground gives a beautiful picture.
You can either blur the background or foreground and also both if you want more focus on the subject.
Utilising the background & foreground will definitely give you an amazing picture.
Check out the below image to better understand the picture should speak better than my words.
- ISO plays a key role:
ISO plays a key role in photography. Its has a very specific role to play and it also controls the light. As discussed in the above points of ISO.
Its controls the grainy or noise in the picture. The lower the ISO you will get a very clear picture and as you keep increasing the ISO you will start losing the clarity. But nowadays high-end camera capture pretty good pictures with larger ISO also.
Knowing your device is the best option to enhance your photography skills. So it’s better you understand your device first. The lowest ISO starts from 100 but few cameras have come with even lower ISO such as 60.
- Change your perspective:
What is perspective in photography?
The angles at which you click the pictures, the way you want the camera to see the subject are called the perspective.
What’s the general perspective of clicking the picture standing in front of the subject and clicking the picture or even more than you bend a sight?
You cannot do better with these angles only.
You can really create very different and unique pictures by changing the perspective.
Try out low angle shot, upper, sideways and whatever angle you can try. It plays a very key role in creating unique pictures.
See how the model looks in a different perspective in the below image.
